Sky News Jeff Randall Live Global Exclusive: The boss of the world’s biggest international bank launches an attack on government policy
Issued: January 20, 2010
[Jeff Randall Live, Wednesday 20 January 2010, 7.30pm on Sky News]

MEDIA ADVISORY Please note that any quotes used from the interview must credit Sky News’ Jeff Randall Live The Group Chief Executive of HSBC, Michael Geoghegan, has spoken to Sky News’ Jeff Randall. Tonight, the entire Jeff Randall Live programme is given over to the exclusive interview with the boss of the world’s biggest international bank.

In September last year Michael Geoghegan announced his intention to relocate from London to Hong Kong.

Before he bids farewell to the UK he has spoken to Jeff about his reasons for the move and his wider thoughts about the state of the UK and global economy.

While HSBC is Britain's biggest bank it hasn't taken a penny of taxpayers' money.

In a frank interview Mr Geoghegan tells Jeff what he makes of the UK's business environment and the impact of recent tax rises on our international reputation.

Watch Jeff Randall's exclusive interview with Michael Geoghegan at 7.30pm this evening on Sky News.

Partial transcript:

Michael Geoghegan: Everybody has an opinion.  I think when you start moving taxation for political reasons, I think the trouble is, here is an industry that can move.  I know a large number of bankers are moving out of the UK.”

Jeff Randall: “And you are one of them.”

Michael Geoghegan: I am moving out for strategic reasons, they are moving out possibly for personal reasons.  They can move because they have opportunities in Switzerland and other places to set up their businesses, but I do believe that we should have a robust industry in the financial services here in the UK because the City has all the rights to win and it would be a terrible shame for it not to benefit from all that expertise that is in our industry.

Jeff Randall: So damage is being done.

Michael Geoghegan: Yes.

A full transcript of the interview will be made available later today (Wednesday 20 January 2010).

Jeff Randall presents a 7.30 pm live half-hour business news show four days a week on Sky News, from Monday to Thursday.

Highlights from the interviews will run at www.skynews.com/jeffrandall shortly after they air and Sky News Active, accessed via the red button on the remote control, will repeat Jeff Randall Live.
