Sky News and Times Online Launch Joint Video Project
Issued: November 17, 2008

London, 17th November 2008: Sky News and Times Online have today confirmed a partnership to develop innovative and compelling video content for users of The Times online and skynews.com

This development will further the scope of stories and footage available on both sites, as well as bringing Sky News’ expertise in video production to Times and Sunday Times journalism.

From today, Times Online articles will for the first time include daily co-produced and co-branded videos produced by The Times/Sunday Times editorial staff and Sky News.  The site will also continue to feature breaking news reports and footage from Sky News. Some of the co-produced videos will also run on skynews.com

The co-produced videos will focus on two areas: business and home and foreign news. Times Online was recently named No 1 site for Business people in the UK. Daily business videos will combine analysis by senior Times/Sunday Times commentators with content from Sky News, which has recently expanded and developed its own business unit. News analysis will bring together the immediacy and impact of Sky News video with analysis from Times and Sunday Times specialists and commentators.

As part of the partnership a Sky News producer has been seconded to work at The Times for up to a year to develop and manage the project. Award winning multi-media producer John Jelley has been working at The Times since May and has already installed new video facilities in The Times newsroom  and is overseeing the creation of new multimedia studios.

John Ryley, Head of Sky News said: “The collaboration between our two news organisations is hugely exciting. With Sky’s reputation for being first with breaking news, and our vast experience in producing award-winning broadcast news, we are very well placed to help enhance Times Online’s video output. It also provides Sky News with an excellent opportunity to showcase Sky News to Times Online’s growing audience.

“These are early days, but we anticipate a strong potential for expansion of this partnership between Sky News and The Times in future,” he said.

James Harding, Editor of The Times, said of the partnership: “We are at an exciting phase in the development of The Times and we know our global audience wants its news from trusted media brands. We have more than 20 million unique monthly users and in the time that we have been developing our partnership with Sky the number of people watching video on our site has trebled. We have very experienced journalists in places around the world that few other news organisations reach and this partnership will help us to to deliver compelling footage to complement the outstanding writing of our specialist editors, reporters and correspondents.  We are delighted to be working with Sky News, the best broadcasters in breaking news.”

Notes to editors:

Times Online is the website of The Times and Sunday Times and is part of The Times Media Group, owned by News International plc, the main UK subsidiary of the global media company The News Corporation Limited

Founded in 1996, Times Online is one of the world’s most read newspaper websites with more than 20 million unique monthly users.  The site has been profitable since 2002 and is free to view.  As well as the UK audience, Times Online has a large international readership, attracted by the newspapers’ reputation for news, views, expertise and quality journalism.

The site echoes the values of both newspapers with quality reporting and analysis on world issues such as global warming, the Middle East, US politics and international business. As well as news, the site carries instant comment and analysis from many specialist reporters on important breaking stories.

The site was redesigned in February 2007, adding more audio-visual content, as well an increased focus on readers’ comments and communities via blogs such as Comment Central and Alpha Mummy.

Sky News and skynews.com: Since its launch in 1989, Sky News has established itself as a formidable and innovative force in the world of news broadcasting. It now provides news to around 145 million people in 36 countries in Europe alone, with distribution across Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Valued for fairness, balance and journalistic objectivity by both viewers and regulators, the award-winning channel has also earned a reputation for the speed of its 24-hour coverage and flexibility in reporting live news – first.

In addition to its status as one of Europe's leading 24 hour news channels, sky.com/news is one of the fastest growing websites on the continent.  It is also available on mobile phones, on desktops, on UK rail platforms and Virgin Atlantic flights.

Sky News now makes a number of programmes for web-only broadcast on skynews.com. These include, ‘Technofile’ - a weekly show looking at the latest technological innovations and ‘Unplugged’ - a new live show broadcast from Sky’s Milbank studio, during which Martin Stanford will discuss the most topical and interesting stories of the day – but with no running order, the programme will be able to respond to latest developments as they happen.

In April 2007 skynews.com launched embedded video clips as standard on the site.

Skynews.com won the Royal Television Society’s innovation award in 2007 for the user generated content it carried during Sky News’ Green Week. And in 2008, it won the Association of Online Publishers award for website of the year.
